Andrew Sutherland

Bio

Andrew Sutherland received an S.B. in mathematics from MIT in 1990. Following a successful career as an entrepreneur in the software industry, he returned to MIT, completing his Ph.D. in mathematics in 2007 under the supervision of Michael Sipser. He was awarded the George M. Sprowls Prize for his thesis. After joining the MIT Department of Mathematics as a research scientist in 2009, Sutherland was promoted to Principal Research Scientist in 2012.

Sutherland's research focuses on computational aspects of number theory and arithmetic geometry; in 2012 he was awarded the Selfridge Prize for his work in these areas. He has played a key role in several large scale collaborations in number theory, including the Polymath project on Bounded Gaps Between Primes and the L-functions and Modular Forms Database. Together with Bjorn Poonen, he leads the MIT node of the Simons Collaboration on Arithmetic Geometry, Number Theory, and Computation.

Sutherland currently serves as Associate Editor of Mathematics of Computation, Editor in Chief of Research in Number Theory, Managing Editor of the L-Functions and Modular Forms Database, and President of the Number Theory Foundation. He was recently named Fellow of the American Mathematical Society as a member of the 2021 Class.
