Daniel Stroock

Bio

Daniel Stroock received his A.B. from Harvard in 1962, his Ph.D. from Rockefeller University in 1966 under the direction of Mark Kac. Following a postodoctoral appointment, he was appointed assistant professor at the Courant Institute, NYU. He then went to the University of Colorado, professor 1975-84, before joining the MIT mathematics faculty in 1984. Professor Stroock's research interests focus on probability theory and stochastic processes. From 2002-06, he was selected the first holder of the second Simons Professorship of Mathematics.

Professor Stroock served as Chair of the Pure Mathematics Committee from 1995-97, and has served as a Board Member of the National Research Council. He has chaired various committees of the AMS, and was a nominee for AMS President in 1999. In 1996, the AMS awarded Daniel Stroock, jointly with Srinavasa Varadhan, the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Seminal Contributions to Research in stochastic equations. In 2007, Professor Stroock received an Honorary Fellowship at Swansea University, Wales, and in 2004 selected to be Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Stroock is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1991), and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences (1995).
