Daniel Kleitman

Bio

Daniel Kleitman received the A.B. from Cornell in 1954, the A.M. and Ph.D. in physics from Harvard in 1955 and 58. Following an NSF postdoctoral fellowship at the Niels Bohr Institute and at Harvard, he was appointed assistant professor of physics at Brandeis, 1960-66. He subsequently joined the MIT mathematics faculty in applied mathematics as associate professor in 1966 (professor in 1969). Professor Kleitman's research interests focus on problems in discrete mathematics. For the MIT administration, he served on a number of committees, including the Educational Policy and the Discipline Committees (1971-73), on the Faculty Nomination Committee (1978-79), and Committee on Social Science Research (1995-96). He was Department Head of the Mathematics Department 1979-84, and Chair of the Applied Mathematics Committee 1974-76, 1988-89, and 2000-02. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1973).
